Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity can be frustrating. The problem is that over time our teeth wear, there are certain lifestyle factors that can speed up the process, leaving patients in complete agony and seeking urgent dental assistance.

There are certain factors which can increase tooth sensitivity. Eliminating these and getting dental assistance when you feel pain are important to reducing the risk of further complications, such as gum disease, root canal treatments and tooth extractions.

I have found a number of my patients experience tooth sensitivity due to their tooth brushing techniques. Some patients are so desperate to clean their teeth properly that they brush too hard. This results in them wearing down the protective layers on the teeth, exposing the nerves and resulting in sensitivity. You don’t have to brush hard for your brushing to be effective. Fluoride toothpaste and brushing twice daily to remove plaque is all that is needed to improve your oral health.

Acidic Foods

Foods that are high in acid can impact your oral health. Those that tend to eat a high acid diet will find that they suffer with tooth sensitivity more than those that eliminate or reduce the amount of acid foods they eat. Acid eats away at the tooth and over time can lead to unwelcome tooth sensitivity.

Gum Disease

Thousands of people throughout the United Kingdom have gum disease and aren’t aware of it. Gum disease is inflamed gums which can lead to serious periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is when the gum pulls away from the tooth to form pockets, which are breeding grounds for dangerous bacteria. Over time the bacteria eat away at the tooth supporting structures, getting into the nerves. If left untreated, periodontal disease can result in tooth loss.

Tooth Decay

There are a number of lifestyle factors that can lead to tooth decay from an unhealthy diet to smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Tooth decay can cause serious tooth sensitivity as the tooth wears away around fillings and makes holes in the tooth, which increases sensitivity to hot and cold.

Tooth Whitening Toothpaste

Everyone wants that white Hollywood smile and many of my patients have chosen tooth whitening toothpaste as part of their oral health routine. It is imperative that any toothpaste used is fluoride toothpaste. Some tooth whitening toothpaste manufacturers include tooth whitening medications into their pastes, which can cause gum and tooth sensitivity. This is why tooth whitening should only be carried out by a dental professional.
