There are certain things you should try and eliminate from your diet moving forward to help you enjoy healthier teeth and gums in the future. Sugars are a dentist’s nightmare. Sugared drinks and foods can cause decay and can lead to serious dental problems moving forward.
We see more children being admitted to hospital for tooth extractions in the UK, the majority of which are caused by sugars.
You will also want to cut back on the acidic foods that you may enjoy. While you may believe these foods are healthy, you should only enjoy them in moderation. This includes foods such as tomatoes and citrus fruits, which are very high in acid, which can eat through the hard enamel of the tooth and cause decay in the long run.
Reduce your alcohol consumption. While the alcohol alone will not cause problems to your oral health, alcohol does lead to dehydration. Dry mouth is one of the worst things for your teeth and gums. Dry mouth can encourage bad bacteria to breed, which can then result in tooth decay.
You should try and stop smoking if you are a smoker. While smoking won’t cause serious damage to your teeth, it will cause discolouration and staining. The only way to rectify this is to have a tooth whitening procedure carried out.
What You Should Be Eating
As with foods you should try and stay away from as much as possible, there are foods you should be trying to add to your diet on a daily basis.
The first thing you are going to want to include is water. Water will help hydrate you, reducing the risk of dry mouth. Water isn’t only good for your oral health, but can help keep your entire body hydrated and is fantastic at flushing toxins from your body on a daily basis.
Ideally you should be drinking a minimum of eight glasses of water each day.
When it comes to foods, try and incorporate as many fruits and vegetables into your diet as possible. Try and choose these items that cause a crunch when you eat them. Crunching on foods promotes saliva production. Saliva is alkaline and protects the teeth and gums.
